Ugly Potato Day breaks a Guinness produce giveaway record

What happened

National Post, dated 5 September 2026, reports that Ugly Potato Day at Surrey, B.C.’s Cloverdale Agriplex set a Guinness World Record for the largest donation of fruits and vegetables in 24 hours. On Aug. 8, organizers gave away 246,528.61 kilograms — 543,501 pounds — of imperfect produce, confirmed by a Guinness adjudicator. About 30,000 people streamed through, each allowed a maximum of two bags. Twenty-five farms donated, about 70 percent of them local.

Sharing Excess founder Evan Ehlers called the day beautiful chaos: carrots, potatoes, corn, lettuce, watermelon, cantaloupes, cherry tomatoes, bins and bins of it. The previous record was 224,064.2 kg (493,977 lbs), set in Sacramento on Sept. 7, 2016.
