An emergency fund is for the bill you did not put on the calendar

An emergency fund is cash for the bill that was not on the calendar: a repair, a gap in pay, a cost that cannot wait for a sale.

Fidelity’s explainer starts small. Get to $1,000, then work toward three to six months of must-pay expenses such as rent and groceries. Holiday gifts and vacations do not count.

Keep it liquid. A simple savings account you can reach beats a stock ticker you have to sell. The point is speed, not yield.

This is education, not a recommendation.
