Hubble tracks a new 10-sided wave at Saturn’s south pole
What happened
NASA’s Hubble mission team, in a Sept. 2, 2026 story updated through Sept. 4, reports a giant 10-sided atmospheric wave encircling Saturn’s south pole. Results appear in Science Advances. Lead author Agustín Sánchez-Lavega of the University of the Basque Country, with co-authors Amy Simon of NASA Goddard and Michael Wong of UC Berkeley, pieced together Hubble Outer Planet Atmospheres Legacy images dating back to 2023. Ground observers, including amateurs via the Planetary Virtual Observatory Laboratory, first noticed an undulating south-polar band around 2024; 2025 ground data strengthened the hint. Hubble confirmed the feature back to 2023.
The northern hexagon has been watched for more than 40 years. Cassini (2004–2017) showed no long-lived southern counterpart. Simon calls the new wave different: it appears to be strengthening, a rare chance to watch a giant pattern develop. The wave sits in a powerful jet and extends through multiple atmospheric layers; different Hubble wavelengths probe different altitudes, so the shape’s apparent position shifts slightly. The open question, as Simon puts it, is why it formed now. Follow-ups with Hubble and JWST are planned.
