Teoscar Hernández walks off the Cardinals, 3-2

What happened

Teoscar Hernández hit a walk-off two-run double in the ninth inning Thursday and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the St. Louis Cardinals 3-2 at Dodger Stadium, the Los Angeles Times reported. The hit avoided a series sweep. Hernández worked a full count against Cardinals closer Riley O’Brien with runners on first and second, then drove a sinker up and over the middle into the left-center gap. Tommy Edman scored easily. Mookie Betts slid home ahead of a throw that came in high and late. Manager Dave Roberts said the club needed it after seven quiet innings and called a win a win however it looks.

Shohei Ohtani got the day off while dealing with a nagging biceps issue. Edman hit leadoff in his place and collected four of the Dodgers’ hits; Hernández had the other two, and the second one decided the game. Before that double, the Dodgers had taken 26 at-bats with runners in scoring position over two games and managed only one hit in those spots. Hernández entered the series with a .668 OPS against right-handers and had been struggling long enough that Roberts had contemplated a left-field platoon. Hernández told Roberts to use someone else if he needed to, and said he would keep working.

The series sample flipped the mood. Hernández went six for 13 against the Cardinals. On Sunday in Detroit he had homered off Framber Valdez. When rosters expanded on Sept. 1, the Dodgers did not call up an outfielder to share time with him, betting the bat would come around. Roberts said the at-bats in the Cardinals series were as good as he had seen from Hernández against right-handers since April, and that late-season and postseason lineups are about who is dependable. Edman called the walk-off huge after two games of pressing.

A September walk-off is a standings and clubhouse fact, not a pennant ceremony. The Dodgers moved to 83-57. The Cardinals sat 70-71. The strip is the gap double, the high throw, the avoid-sweep banner, and a clutch card. Sports only: the biceps note is a resting-day detail, not a medical deep dive.
