McCord plays the whole night. The roster waits until Sunday.

What happened

Kyle McCord wanted one clean look at an NFL game and got the whole night instead. With Jordan Love and Tyrod Taylor resting, the Packers’ reserve quarterback went 22 of 35 for 226 yards and four touchdown passes Friday in a 42-38 preseason win over Arizona, AP reports via CBS Sports. Trailing by 11, he hit Kisean Johnson from 28 yards with 3:19 left, then again from 10 yards with 20 seconds left after Arron Mosby intercepted Kedon Slovis. Love, watching from the sideline, called the second-half plays. McCord said Love had never done that before. “Naw. We’ll see.”

It was a step for a 2025 sixth-rounder who spent last year on Philadelphia’s practice squad. Coach Matt LaFleur praised his poise in the pocket and his willingness to stand in under pressure. Nyjalik Kelly added a pick and a sack. Rookie kicker Trey Smack finished the exhibition slate 9 for 9 on field goals, three from 50-plus, long of 59. Cardinals receiver Ihmir Smith-Marsette left with an ankle injury. Neither club dressed its starters for long. LaFleur called it maybe the most entertaining preseason game he had seen.

Why it matters

This was the last audition before Sunday’s cuts. McCord said as much: it is out of his control now, he did what he could, and he waits. J. Michael Sturdivant, who had six catches for 112 yards and a score, used the same barn-door language. The hay is in. Coaches decide who stays. A 42-38 box score in August does not lock a 53-man spot, but it is the tape a third quarterback wants on the table when the math gets cruel.

Green Bay visits Minnesota on Sept. 13. Arizona visits the Chargers the same weekend. The brother-coach subplot — Matt LaFleur against Arizona’s Mike LaFleur — is over. What remains is a roster that still has to choose among backups who just played a real game in public.

Conclusion

McCord made his case in full. The roster does not have to take it. That gap, between a four-touchdown night and a Sunday phone call, is the whole preseason.
