Red Sox run into a 1-0 wall in the Bronx

What happened

The Yankees beat the Red Sox 1-0 on Friday because Boston kept handing the outs back. Paul Goldschmidt homered in the third off Patrick Sandoval. That was the game’s only run. AP’s Mike Fitzpatrick, via Boston 25, writes that Ceddanne Rafaela then ran the Sox out of the fifth and the seventh. In the fifth, with two on and one out against Cam Schlittler, Wilyer Abreu lined to center and Rafaela was doubled off first as the trail runner, Willson Contreras on deck. “That’s a bad read on me. That’s very bad,” Rafaela said. “No excuses.” Cameras caught him shaking his head at himself in center field afterward.

In the seventh he singled, Abreu doubled, and Contreras flied to medium left. Cody Bellinger threw 99.7 mph and cut Rafaela down at the plate. Rafaela went on his own. Interim third-base coach Chad Epperson was holding him. Interim manager Chad Tracy still liked the send, arguing they have not scored much and you take the shot with speed at third. Schlittler called it the throw that changed the game. Boston finished 1 for 7 with runners in scoring position, stranded 10, and was shut out for a second straight night, the first 1-0 loss to New York since July 25, 2008.

Why it matters

The season series is 5-all. The Sox (73-61) sit three games behind the Yankees (76-58) in the race for the top American League wild-card spot and home-field in a possible best-of-three. Paired with a 4-0 loss Wednesday at Miami, it is Boston’s first back-to-back shutouts since September 2023. These are August games with October math. Aaron Boone’s line was “everything matters in these games.” Bellinger said the atmosphere was incredible and that he always wants to impact a game somehow. The throw did. Schlittler was thrilled with the end result and called it a great throw on a great runner.

Rafaela’s two reads are the tape the club will hate. One was a double play that killed a rally with the cleanup hitter waiting. Tracy was not even sure if it was an outs mix-up or both runners extending on a ball they thought would drop. The other was an aggressive send that needed a perfect throw and got one. Tracy split the difference: the fifth was a mistake, the seventh was the right kind of gamble because they have not scored much and you force the defense to be perfect. The scoreboard does not split it. It just says 1-0.

Conclusion

Goldschmidt’s ball left the park in the third and nobody else crossed. Boston’s runners died on the bases, once on a bad read and once on a 99.7 mph throw that Rafaela himself said was the only throw that could get him. That is a rivalry night in a 1-0 box score, and a wild-card gap that did not shrink. The redrawn strip is Yankees versus Red Sox in Yankee Stadium, Goldschmidt in pinstripes, Bellinger in left, NYY 1 BOS 0 on the board.
